Invitation to celebrate opening of the Dental Academy
We wish to invite your dental team to the new University of Portsmouth Dental Academy. Come and see the new facility and hear a lecture by one of the leading international figures in contemporary dental research and education, Professor Nairn H.F. Wilson CBE FKC, Dean and Head, King's College London Dental Institute entitled:
'Vision for the Future of Dentistry'
This is to be held on Wednesday 15th September 2010 and will be followed by a tour of the new facility. This will be the first opportunity to have a tour of the Dental Academy.
Dental Academy Update
The chairs and units are in, all of the equipment and materials are ordered and, most exciting, is the appointment of all the new staff who have now joined us at the Dental Academy.

Graduation awards for Staff
Graduation joy for SPCD staff. The Dental Academy has offered congratulations to Judy Fraser, Marina Harris, Sarah Williams and Jo-Anne Taylor for the recent award of Post Graduate Certificate in learning and teaching in Higher Education from the University of Portsmouth and to Jane Lewis, Dawn Walsh and Leanna Wynne who were awarded the MA in learning and teaching.
Honorary Doctorate Award for Professor Nairn Wilson
Professor Nairn Wilson, CBE, Dean and Head of the Dental Institute and Deputy Vice-Principal (Health) at King's College London Dental Institute (KCLDI) at Guys', King's College and St Thomas' Hospitals, has been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science (honoris causa) in recognition of his support of the development of our new partnership with KCLDI.
King's College London are looking to recruit local experienced general dental practitioners who want to supervise and teach integrated team care dentistry. These positions would be based at the Dental Academy.

A Guide to Minor Oral Surgery & Implant Surgery in the General Practice Environment

This course is essential for General Dental Practitioners who want to improve their skills and gain more confidence in dento-alveolar surgery. The day will cover the following:
- Third molar & apical surgery
- Extractions and avoiding ‘disasters’
- Medical history, pharmacology & local anaesthesia
- An overview of current implant surgical techniques including sinus & block grafting
Application of Topical Fluoride Varnish by Dental Nurses
October 2010, January 2011, March 2011
A Collaboration between NESC and the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy.
This course aims to provide the knowledge and practical skills required for the safe application of topical fluoride varnish by dental nurses in either a clinical setting or in community. The course is split into two modules, the first module is classroom-based teaching and the second module consists of simulation seminars and lectures in a phantom head laboratory. On successful completion of both modules, portfolio and examination, participating dental nurses will receive a certificate of competency from the University of Portsmouth, Dental Academy.

Cutting Edge Root Canal Preparation
This contemporary endodontics course will provide hands-on training in:
• Microbiological aetiology of root canal infection
• Disinfection and preparation of the root canal system
• Obturation and restoration
All participants are required to bring a minimum of three molars accessed ready for root canal treatment. When the root canals are located they must only be instrumented with a number 10 hand file.
Dental Caries: New Concepts in Diagnosis & Management

This course will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about dental caries. You will gain an insight into the various techniques which may be employed to detect early caries, how to monitor such lesions and when to restore the tooth with a filling.

The University of Portsmouth is setting up an alumni association, and we want to invite you to be a part of it. Our graduates are really important to us, and we want to get back in touch with as many as we possibly can. So far the University has had 6,000 former students sign up as part of our efforts to build the alumni association but we're still keen for even more people to join up.
